It's local creature week, I've decided. That's where I introduce you to some of the locals of a four-legged variety. We started the year off with the little black and white calf, who needs a name incidentally. I know for a fact that he'll end up with several names, because several people will think they named him, and all the others who think the same will smirk silently yet knowingly every time they think of that little guy because they know his real name. So we're having a naming contest. Go ahead, knock yourselves out. You may win absolutely nothing except the knowledge that you named a bull once and the name stuck. Winner will be announced on Wednesday. Why Wednesday? That's when Cow-baby will be one week old. That's for all of you who need landmark things like that in your life...And btw, I did conclude my milkman business the other day: I arranged with the cowshed to supply me milk. Maybe even from the little guy's mummy. How local is that? I love it. So now every evening (when the cows get home, Mommie Dearest), just after the cows have been milked, the cowshed will deliver milk to my door. Now you can sleep at night, knowing I've sorted that out...
OK, so local creatures week: I know yesterday was about rickshaws and rickshaw wallahs, and some might say that's quite insulting or abusive to call them creatures, some might say it makes perfect sense, but I've rather soundly concluded that two feet and three wheels make you a creature. I'm sure most mothers of toddlers will agree. So let's move on.
Today it's the squirrels. Or "those little fast and cute guys" as they're usually referred to. They're called palm squirrels and of course as with most things in India, there's a very wonderful story about them: specifically about how they got their stripes. When Lord Rama was building the bridge from India to Sri Lanka, all the animals helped; the little squirrels were working hard, and in affection Lord Rama picked one up and stroked its back with three fingers (that's him pictured stroking the squirrel, upper left), leaving a permanent mark of three stripes (only Indian squirrels have 3 stripes, usually it's 5). Don't try this at home: firstly, all power to you if you can catch one of the little buggers. Secondly, you are not God so your touch will not leave marks eternally on the backs of furry creatures. Get over it.Lord Rama, as you may or may not know, was God, which possibly had a lot to do with the fact that he is the greatest ruler in Indian history and is still glorified in India today, thousands and thousands of years later. He and his lovely wife, Sita, are upheld as the ultimate examples in dharma, ruling kingdoms, marriage, duty, chastity, and all other wonderful qualities. Lord Rama was quite the warrior, and always held a bow and arrow. I imagine he wielded a mean sword, too, which possibly explains these photos of the squirrels (below). See, Lord Rama runs in their blood, so the things they get up to when no one is looking...well, if I hadn't taken this photo you'd never have believed me.
You believe me now, though...right? Right??
Right.
Happy...wait, what day is it?

52 of you added your thoughts:
You bet I believe you. And I like the name Cow-baby. Not original, for sure, but it's cute.
Love the pictures of the squirrels too funny.
Okay here are couple of my names
1.Kumar - means Lil Prince!
he is I like this one
2. Ajarb-cuz it' u backwards
3. Rohan - means he who travels a
higher ground...like u My "Q"
4. Sundar - means beautiful!
Those crazy Jedi Warriors! The one in the middle looks like Obi-Wan Kenobe. . . Hey, that's a good name for the little cow!
OMG Those squirrels totally kick ass! I love it.
Well, I asked my little creature and she's about as inspired as I am... her suggested name:
"Baby Cow".
This is quite possibly why we have 2 fish named "Fish 1" and "Fish 2"... It's a good thing I didn't let her name the dog... ;)
Adorable pictures of the creatures I typically refer to as tree rats. As for the calf, why not, "half calf," as in half caffeinated. That will ensure a gentler nature and since she's black AND white....
Squirrels. Ick. I have issues with squirrels. Rats with ambitious tails they are.
How about Pini, as in Scallopini? Hee hee... kidding (sometimes I crack myself up). I had a fish I named Caviar once ;).
Squirrels...they are, apparently the bane of Lola's existence. She wants to catch one SOOOO badly but they always scamper up a tree or somewhere out of Corgi reach (which with her 3 inch legs is most places...)
Baby cow names....I have it! Rupert! Rupert the Bull! :)
They'll have three stripes from me once they feel a taste of tghe lash from me! Greedy little buggers...
Ah, no they won't, I don't have the heart, even after the little buggers ate my tomatoes.
Cow name: "Ruminous" - the perfect combination of 'ruminant' and 'luminous'! Or 'Lord Ruminous'
Ooh, 'Lord Ramanous'!
Please, pretty please? I would be so honored!
OK, I admit I looked this one up.
"Koushik" - Love and Affection
Peace - Rene
Gran, to me he's always going to be cow-baby, so that is a winner anyway. I'm talking about his "other" name that we'll introduce him to folks as :) But cow-baby sticks...I also love it.
Dar honey, very determined :) Rohan might stick, but we have a Sundar who is a girl-cow, so we don't wanna give Cow-baby issues :) I don't know about the backwards Braja but it did raise a laugh!
Liz: Obi-wan-kanobe is hilarious but I doubt there's a Bengali alive who can say it!
Vodka: Yeah like you in that photo!! Go Nadia!!
Michelle: OK, Cow-baby...will she be satisfied with that? That's always going to be one of his names.
Susan: My husband also calls them that. These ones are also tiny, and look even more like rats. Mentioning half and half makes me want Starbucks, you evil woman...
Diane: We don't make jokes about barbaric "food" in front of the calf...please...
Temple: Rupert??! LOL, that got a laugh. Cute. OK let's see.
Irish: You won't believe it but they have a Rama bull...I'll get a photo of him for you.
Rene: So far I think you're winning, especially since Kaushik rhymes with cow...I like this one the most :) How not to disappoint the others? We'll give him a triple barrel name!
Thanks for the story! And yeah, it really needed the picture to believe you! Btw, I didn’t know about the stripe thing, so thanks!
Amor (or Eros in Greek) or Don Juan - coz the calf already stole our hearts!
I'll name him Moo-ey.
Or "Holy".
Those squirrels are badass.
I can't get away with words like "badass", can I?
I'm drawing a blank on a name but it reminded me of a friend who had 3 cows and named them Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner (she wanted to make sure her boys knew they weren't pets!) She also had 2 pigs... Pork Chop and Bacon. :)
Love the Jedi Squirrels!
How about "Abunga"? As in, cowabunga.... dude!
Sorry about my previous lame-ass post. You were good to call me out on that one. I've made it right... but I realize now, that I should have at least posted a pix of Johhny Depp. I'll do better yogi. I promise! =)
Fida: He's definitely got Don Juan eyes, hasn't he? and they're actually a dark blue...they're gorgeous. I've never seen anything like it and am wondering if they'll change in time, like all babies are born with blue eyes, y'know?
Marinka: Badass works, why not? I like Holy, but he's a bull not a cow, so it might not go down to well and the other bulls might think he has homoerotic issues...
Joanie: Kinda funny but I don't wanna direct anyone's thought to food=cows!!
Adlibby: You're a nutter, and NO, I'm not calling him Abunga!! lol... I loved your lame ass post...whaddya talking' about?!!
Squirrels...little varmints are always stealing my poor birdies food! They eat my bulbs, and they devour my Gerbera Daisies. I don't find them one bit cute! Demon seed as far as I'm concerned lol.
OK Nikki my little crumpet, I just want to set you straight: those horrid critters who are a nuisance in the US and the UK? These little guys are NOT like that: they really are cute, harmless, they don't destroy anything, and everyone loves them. They're of the squirrel family but share few of their rodent-like characteristics...I should have made that more clear. I know people who have them as pets, they're so cute..
Ohhhhh, nothing like squirrels with light sabers. Thanks for wandering over to my blog! Wild is just great, not to be confused with Mr. Wild, my other half. I can't say better, I'd say we're about even. Happy blogging!
4 legged creatures??? im dealing with 3 of those now! :)
Oh, and as far as a name, how about Spot? I see some kind of white spot on his shoulders (he/she?). Yeah, boring and bland, but it could be fitting.
Uh... I really want to come up with something that's not food related, because that's bad, but, it's hard.
Darth Milk?
What the heck? I take time out to play a game of Jenga with the cousins, and all heck breaks loose in creature land? I mean, WHAT is going on with that little guy in the middle? Is he attempting a Karate Kid move or has the one in the back just sliced his feet out from under him?
Braja,
thank you for your comments and the follow. loves it!
are those squirrels in a gang? it looks like their ready to rumble.
Squirrels are one of the most lovable creatures ! As nimble as nimble can be, and as harmless as harmless can be !
Its a treat that they have been featured here..and maybe a little bit of a shame that they perhaps will not know..or..maybe they do !
:)
I totally believe you. (Does the one on the left know that the one on the far right actually is his father? No, really.)
XO
A.
Ninja squirrels!!!!! :D
And u r ur own blog follower?!
how did u do that?
I like the Ninja Squirrels!
Bull names, eh? Some suggestions are:
Chai (as in the tea)
Ferdinand - a very peaceful bull that stars in Disney cartoons that they show over here over Christmas. He doesn't want to fight, but only sit and smell the flowers.
Rama - seems like a good name according to your post
- Canon - cos you can use it to take black and white pictures of black and white bulls
- Tuxedo
- Oreo
OK - enough suggestions already!
Braja - how did you get those little guys to do that? You're a genius:) Loved the story. A suggestion for your little bull - Woden - who Wednesday was named after. As you probably know he was a god in Anglo-saxon paganism. I know your little guy is Indian but I couldn't think of anything else other than Daisy, and that's a girl's name. xxxx
I had a cow when we city folk moved to the country, and tried to become country folk. :)
Anyhow, I named my cow Moo-randa. isn't that cute?
But, that's a girl's name.
So, I will think about a name for Cow Baby...when I'm not so tired. :)
Try and keep up: I'm working up the list to confuse those of you who come back and read. Ha! Sorry...
CC: Mooranda is...ok stop that ;)
Henry; That's very masculine actually. Sounds slightly depressing, but other than that, masculine :)))
Thanks LadyFi: I can always count on you for the extreme :)
Indi: I have no idea: it just said one day, "Follow this Blog" and I'm like, "no way..." and it worked. Weird...
Anna: The parent thing is what they're fighting about, I believe
Kavi: I love 'em too...no country has squirrels as cute as India :)
Lisa: Yeah Star Wars Gang
Sassy: It's the Star Wars Luke/Darth parenthood fight. Anna exposed it.
Capt D: OK...I'll sleep on it.
Spot...hmmm....:)
I think Kudos is a good name for a bull... or maybe Panda?
Or ... or.... or???!!!??
the last pic is so crazy :D
Oh man! I wish we had Indian squirrels. Our mangy squirrels have a love affair with our attic.
As for a name for the baby cow... Dusty Rhoades - since he likes dirt so much.
It is lame. I are sorry...
Beth: I'm still laughing :)))
hey Siska...nice to meet you...
Ha! lokk at the squirrels...
Thanks for visiting me :)
What about Phil?(elephant in Arabic)
but sort of friendly (love etc) in any language
He is so very gorgeous
makes me miss the animals from when we lived in Morocco.
So happy to have chanced upon your blog......
Hey Cindy :)
Elizabeth: Phil??! LOL...that's hilarious...seriously :) He is gorgeous isn't he? He's gonna end up with a very princley name...
Bella... means pretty in Italian
How about Giselle? or Sofia?
Hey... I'm a wop... what did you expect?
The squirrels... what are you... the squirrel whisperer?
Me and my books... and you and your zoo! :)
I miss the days of following 3 blogs. I missed this entirely, thought it strange you'd been so quiet (except for bitch-slapping me on my blog again). BTW 70 comments?? Holy Moly Morgenstein. Hey, That can be the bull's name!
Maya wants to name him Maya (but ofcourse) or Anik(after a cousin) or Nolan (after her brother) or Birbal (after Nana/Nani's dog).
I like the name Birbal. The calf will grow up to be as wise and brave and gentle as the great Birbal. I just know it!
Hahahahaha, the picture of the Laser sword wielding squirels has my little boy in splits! He cant get enough of them. I think I have to print this one out for his room!
He is 4 and obsessed with all things Star Wars!
Ferdinand the bull is my choice. He would be named after a great piece of literature.
Hi, I'm new here. Normally I wouldn't comment right away, but that pic of the squirrels at the end is hysterical! lol. And great story about the stripes!
Braja,
Digging the squirrels!
How about Marlon for the cow-baby?
Paige
The photoshop work w/the squirrels is hilarious!
Who could resist those joyous squirrels with their tiny light sabers!
As for the cow, I'm thinking Rosebud. (In the Orson Welles sense, of course.) I know he's a boy, but let's go with his sweeter side.
Saundra|: A right pair aren't we :)
OK maybe Morgenstein is his middle name which no one ever mentions :)
Kiran: Glad you boy loved it :) A bull called Maya? Hmmmm
Ferdinand is good :)
Sheila feel free, everyone else does, just go for it :)
Paige: Marlon? OK, I guess he IS just gonna keep gettin bigger :)
24: it worked for me :)
Bee: I know
well I am not very creative today for some reason, but my first suggestion is Chica (my aunt's puppy died right before your baby was born, so maybe some of Chica's boisterious, ebullient and loving spirit made it back to India??) and my second suggestion is Bubbles. Bubbles the Cow Baby :-)
