Monkeys & Winter & November is the best....

It's Monday. Or it was a couple of days ago, I'm behind. And, you guessed it, Monday means something completely different over here than it does over there---wherever you are. Monday means moon day, and it's Shiva's day. Not because he's the demigod of the moon. That's Chandra. See? This is easy if you just know how....so say good morning to Shiva and his good wife Parvati, goddess of material creation -----> Yes, they're a two-career family and they're busy. You would be too if the entire cosmic creation was yours to pl....ok I'm getting out of this while I can.

Winter is on its way. Nowadays the southerly breeze doesn't blow in from the fields through my back window with warm-day scents and the sound of long grass and summer attached to it; now it comes in silently and slowly from the north, the only time of year the snow-capped Himalayas share themselves with us. And, of course, it's the wrong time of year: where were those cool, frost-winged breezes in the melting, melting, month of May? No doubt those winds reached out, eager to spread their love, but were hurled back to their mountain by the oven-door blast of heat that radiated from the plains of the country they dwell above. No one is free to move in the summer here...not even the wind.

Everyone talks about the weather here: it is a hot topic, possibly because it changes so often. We actually have six seasons here, so if you don't like the weather just hang around and it will change after two months, like clockwork. We bitch about the heat, then the cold, then the rain. We do not bitch about November as it is the stellar month, the month of all months, the month that is tightly packed in between October, where memories of the heat might still linger, and December, where those memories are replaced with thoughts of how cold the marble is to the touch, the marble that you can't escape from: the floor, the bathroom, the desk top, the kitchen, or when your outstretched arm goes beyond the boundaries of your yoga mat and the chill ruins your savasana. Summer is a long, long way away. And we like that. (that pic there is the view from my back window, incidentally....)

Outside the birds have gone absolutely nuts, the monkeys are providing a sideshow spectacle outside the neighbor’s house, bouncing up and down on the tin-shed huts outside their window, and someone is doing a cross between a Krishna-influenced love ballad and a Southern jig on a flute in the near distance.

It's pretty quiet for a Monday, and I'm suspicious. Even if it is Wednesday...

Thank you for sharing your beautiful view. It's going to be quite a while before I look out and see green here again.

Weee ... I love your Monday/Wednesday! That really is quite a view! I've been a little suspicious of this Global Warming phenom, however ... it's been nearly springlike around here lately, where normally it's windy and bone-chillingly cold. I'm about to be proven wrong I fear and winter will be balmy and comfortable. Honestly ... I can live with that!!!

Have a great week!

So the topic of conversation is generally the same as in the UK? The countries that have the most changeable weather become obsessed with it, don't you find?

Everybody talks about the weather here too.....Happy Monday even though I am reading on Wednesday (wish it were still Monday) xv

Monday, Wednesday - any day is fine for a friendly blog visit. Good morrow, regardless of which day!

Mondays suck and now you are trying to move them to Wednesdays! Lets rethink that please!! How about two Fridays!

November is a stellar month - great writing!

We only have 2 seasons where I live. There is Summer and then everything else! LOL! Sucks when you have to put your feet on a cold floor!

Talking about the weather seems to be a universal language. Glad that November is a stellar month. Here in Scandinavia it's a grey dull month: sandwiched between the glorious crisp days of October and the soft luminous snows of December.

Sarah Lulu said...

Aaaaahhhh yes it's a Monday kind of Wednesday.

And we are heading towards summer....the jacarandas are out.

Irish Gumbo said...

Wait, hold on, okay I thought it was Thursday, but really it was Tuesday. Or was that yesterday?

sigh...monkeys would cool, though.

Love your view. I agree with Gumby - monkeys would be a cool soundtrack.
A delicious post, Braja. :-)

A
sharp November dawn,
he cycles thru
the crooked path
in the midst
of the verdant fields,
the milk cans
banging in protest
as the cycle
hiccups
over a stubborn field rock.

Meditating,
emerging,
she wraps her shawl
tighter,
she waits,
breathing in
the exquisite aroma
of the ginger tea.

A whiff
of boiling milk,
copper and jasmine
honey, yogurt,
sugar, ghee
amidst
a Flutewallah
enjoying
vermillion,
conch shells,
garlands,
and
earthen oil
lights...

He stands,
crosses His right ankle
in front of the left,
and
lifts the flute
to the lips.

The Aarti over,
He watches amused
as a child
looks eagerly
at the prasad;
nods,
then raises the flute
and plays
once again,
the beautiful
Melody of Life.

There's a Goddess of material creation?

Give me her info.

My daughters will be praying to her!

I like your November, Braja. I rather like mine, too, but I'll take your November instead of my January. Deal?

Now, I am REALLY sad that I had to cancel my trip to India this month. I was supposed to board my flight on the 15th for a 23 day stay but, because of having to come to Georgia for a 17 day visit to help my 85-year-old mother, I will defer my trip until January or February. You make this time of year sound wonderful. I find it quite nice, however, twelve years ago when I visited in Feb. Regardless, I was so thrilled to finally reach India, except for monsoon season, I think I would have been in ecstacy, regardless!

Brian Miller said...

ok, i am confused...what day is it?

a Krishna-influenced love ballad and a Southern jig on a flute in the near distance...you really need to get a recording of this to share. and maybe a video of the monkeys...

hope you have a trememndous November Braja!

November is an awesome month. I was born on it, you know. We share some of the same oppressive weather extremes. Our worst heat is in August and coldest is January. Rains are particularly cruel during hurricane season (we are just now saying goodbye to Tropical Storm Ida who is overstaying her welcome with an inconvenient drizzle). What we don't have are monkeys. I envy you your monkeys. I might even sit on cold marble just to have on swing by my window.

Beautiful post Braja. I send my happy November friendship across the sea!

I've always loved November, all it's Mondays and Wednesdays and Sundays...it may be my favorite month, because it is ushering in winter, another of my favorites...you entertained, as usual!

You have 6 seasons? India has more of everything!

Love the view from your back window by the way!

If you don't like the weather, just wait a bit...we say the same thing here only we're usually talking about the day, not the season. Except in August. August is interminable.

Sylvia K said...

Glad you're enjoying a break from the heat. Have to agree with Lori, any month when no one bitches is definitely a great month --- hhhmmmm, wonder when we'll have one of those here in Seattle???
Enjoy!

Ah, something the east and the west have in common. Bitching about the seasons. Common ground, Life is good. :)

Here in northeast Ohio, we have only 4 seasons:
Fall, Winter, Summer and Orange Barrel. Orange Barrel being construction season when the roads are lined so lovely with those stupid orange barrels.

I love how you transport me there...with you...visually and with the touch of the cold marble....great post. Great view from your window too!

Once I stopped working full time, I noticed that all of my weekdays melted into one. I like it. I don't like being tied to a calendar.

I KNOW...what happened to Monday and Tuesday? You just go right ahead and let this be your Monday!

The view outside you home is lovely.
Have yourself a great week, no matter what day it is.

This was another great post Braja, thank you. I always feel like I learn a little more about India when I come by.

Thanks,

It must be fun to have monkeys out your back window!

Pretty view!

I find November to be filled with much coming and going.
I'm a November-born, on the day of my birth, down the hall from me in the same hospital, my great Aunt passed away. My son, born Nov 13, came into the world as his Great Grandmother passed away, just down the hall, same hospital. They tell me the very busy maternity wards of November are because of the 9 month span from Feb's valentines day 'celebrations', but what of the passings. I have someone to remember for nearly every November date. Tomorrow, I remember my father, and also a good friend who passed on the same day and on the same November date he was born.

Its a busy month.

My nuts have gone birds. Pretty. Your post, I mean, not my comment.

Cheryl said...

I love November here, with crisp, cool air, the scent of wood brining fires, the sounds of people raking their leaves. But now I'm curious to experience November over there, to hear monkeys outside my window (rather than the squirrels having another fight with one another), and views like that.

Can I just say that I was happy that I had my six year old daughter sitting next to me when I scrolled through your blog? She asked questions about the picture on this one and I tried to point out that in another country, other people believed in more than one god. She also saw the picture of some of the men balancing and was impressed. And we enjoyed the Pepsi commercial. It is nice to expose her to other cultures, even if it is a small window like your blog. Someday, with a little luck, I hope we take them to more countries. It builds an appreciation for diversity and the joy in the variety of the world.

Wild Child said...

Oh and she would like to know why elephants and hippos want Pepsi.

We're just getting over the tail end of a late in season hurricane, so have had tons of rain for several days. And this had made it hard to tend to yard work but the squirrels have loved it. I see them scurrying around like crazy, picking up all the acorns that the wind has taken from the oak trees, storing them for what promises to be a solid winter ahead.

In New England, September is the stellar month. In Georgia it's March/April.

You've GOT to take pictures of those monkeys. I used to keep Shiva next to my bed and then someone told me he had something to do with death so I moved him across the room so I could keep my eye on him.

Captain Dumbass said...

The view out my back window is pretty, but a monkey dancing a jig would make it perfect.

Good Morning Shiva,Parvati and Braja,

I could get lost in your writing...why did you stop!

Actually we've got only two seasons here: Winter and construction season which would be July.

Happy November to you.

We just got snow.

It's not so bad, though, since I've got no marble.

Ok, I am finished now.

Gosh, sounds kind of like our weather! It cannot make up its mind here in Colorado. 2 days ago it was 75 degrees and today it's snowing and will continue through the weekend. Those pictures you saw of the farm.....2 days ago!!!
I would love to look out my window and see your view.

I'm looking forward to not being tied to the calendar too. I won't be a well-off retiree but I will be happy to find my own life rhythms for work, meditation and whatever comes up in between.

hey Braja, lovely view out of window! It's been a few days of mild November weather here, good for last minute yard/deck chores of putting away furniture or raking leaves, next comes snow!
